The Adventures of Jeff and Dave
14 Mile Bank Shark / Rockfish
Thresher sharks have been starting to bite out on the high spots locally.
We were ready to to battle with the our favorite local "Big Game" fish.
We had the normal heavy tackle needed to land a 300-400 pound Thresher
rigged up. We slow trolled mackerel for about three hours during the high
tide cycle at the 14 Mile Bank with no knock-downs.
We took this
opportunity to try out one of Jeff's new electric fishing reels. Jeff was
given a pair of older Miya-epoch
electric fishing reels by his brother who used them for years. We wired
them so they could be plugged into the boat's batteries and filled them
with Izor 80 pound dacron line. We cut up a left over mackerel and baited
a simple ganion and a couple pounds of lead. We started our drift over
the top of the bank at about 450 feet. This area gets hit allot because
it's close so there was not much action. We keep letting out more line
until we were in the 700 - 800 foot range. Normally we would not fish this
deep because it's too much work to wind it in by hand. With the automatic
reels we smiled as we took turn pressing the button. Jeff watched the rod
while I organized our shark tackle and had a beer. Bradon yelled as the
stout rod went bendo and the action began. We quickly hoisted 6 nice rock
cod from the dark cold depths of the bank before returning home. Now we
knew we had more than one reason to fish the 14 mile bank.
